What is TPIN in Groww?

TPIN is a 6-digit number provided by CDSL to facilitate selling transactions. CDSL requires investors to give consent to their broker to debit shares from investors' demat accounts. This process helps to verify investor holdings. On providing a TPIN before a sell transaction the investor allows permission to the broker to debit shares from his/her account. Earlier investors had to provide a written power of attorney to grant permission to debit shares. Using TPIN has made it safe, easy, and fast to authorize selling transactions.
The fullform of TPIN is Transaction Personal Identification Number, This number is shared only with the investors by CDSL

Things to remember...
In 2023, CDSL introduced the e-DIS system. This system provides additional security to investors as it requires investors to provide the TPIN as well as an OTP along side to verify holdings before selling.
TPIN authorization is valid for one trading session, which means if you use TPIN to allow debit of shares today at 9:00 am , you can also execute other sell transactions until 3:30 Pm today without requiring TPIN authorization. But if you plan to execute other sell transactions on the next day, you might have to re authorize your share debit transaction using TPIN again.

How to generate TPIN?
TPIN can be generated via the CDSL website. In order to generate your TPIN, follow steps mentioned below.
Step 1: Go to CDSL website TPIN generation page
Step 2: Enter your BO ID, PAN number & Captch code

Step 3: Enter OTP recived on your registered mobile phone and Email ID
You will recive a OTP from edis@cdslindia.co.in on your registered email
Step 4: The TPIN would be sent to your registered email address and mobile phone via email and sms.
What is verify holdings in Groww?
In order to sell holdings, the investor first has to provide permission to Groww to sell his/her stocks by providing a TPIN. Since Groww is a depository participant with CDSL this a manadatory step. As discused above, completing verification by providing TPIN authorizes Groww to sell the investor's shares.

How to verify holdings in Groww?
Step 1: Go to the holdings area of stocks and click on "Verify holdings" button
Step 2: Click on "Verify using TPIN and OTP"
Forgot your TPIN? Refer to this section to generate your TPIN
Step 3: TPIN & OTP
a. Enter your TPIN and click on verify
b. Enter OTP and click verify
Step 4: Go back to your Groww dashboard and execute sell transaction
Verifying holdings has become mandatory since 2023 for security purpose.
